The Freedom of Digital Nomadism: My 8-Year Journey
I still remember the thrill of my first trip abroad, when my mother sent my brother and me to Mombasa, Kenya, at the tender age of 10. Little did I know that this experience would sow the seeds of a lifelong passion for travel and exploration. Fast forward to 2013, when I embarked on my first big work trip to Sydney as a consultant. The luxurious Premium Economy seats on Virgin Atlantic and the stunning views of the Sydney Opera House from my hotel room only fueled my desire to experience new cultures and meet new people.
The breathtaking Sydney Opera House
As my business took off, I traveled extensively for corporate consulting contracts, visiting 38 countries in just three years. Each trip was an opportunity to learn about the world, its people, and myself. The more I traveled, the more I realized that I wanted to break free from the shackles of a conventional lifestyle and embrace the freedom of digital nomadism.
The thrill of exploring new destinations
In 2016, I took the plunge, selling all my possessions and relocating to Medellin, Colombia. Since then, I’ve lived and worked in Mexico City, the UK, Paris, Madrid, Nairobi, Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Cape Town, Rome, Lisbon, Nice, and Barcelona. The pros and cons of digital nomadism are many, but for me, the freedom to explore and experience new cultures far outweighs the challenges.

My trusty travel gear
As a digital nomad, having the right gear is essential. Here are eight unusual gadgets I always pack:
1. Twelve South AirFly Bluetooth Adapter
This Bluetooth wireless audio transmitter receiver is a game-changer for long flights or train rides. Plug it into the airplane’s entertainment center, and you can pair your wireless device for an uninterrupted listening experience.
2. Kings Loot Wallet with AirTag Holder
A good RFID wallet is a must-have for any traveler. The Kings Loot wallet not only provides RFID protection but also has a sleek design and a slot for my AirTag.
3. iPad Magic Keyboard Folio
On long flights, a laptop can be cumbersome. That’s why I always carry an iPad Air and the Apple Magic Keyboard sleeve. It’s the perfect combination of portability and productivity.
4. Audio Technica ATR2100x-USB Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
As a business owner, I do a lot of media interviews. Good sound quality is essential, which is why I travel with the Audio Technica ATR2100x-USB Cardioid Dynamic Microphone.
5. Anker MagGo Power Bank
Power outages can be frustrating, especially when you’re in the middle of a critical project. The Anker MagGo Power Bank is my trusty companion on the go, providing 15x fast charging and a usage indicator.
6. Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
After trying several noise-canceling headphones, I settled on the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. They’re comfortable, effective, and perfect for long flights or noisy cafes.
7. Apple EarPods
You can never go wrong with a pair of trusty wired headphones. I always carry a set of Apple EarPods as a backup, along with the necessary dongles for my phone and computer.
8. Anker 332 USB Power Strip
Hotel rooms often have limited outlets, which is why I always pack an extension cord with surge protection. The Anker 332 USB Power Strip is a lifesaver, allowing me to charge multiple devices at once.
Digital nomadism has its challenges, but with the right gear and a willingness to adapt, the rewards are endless. Whether you’re embarking on a long remote work trip or exploring the world as a digital nomad, the right gear makes all the difference.
