Cracking the Code: My Struggle with NYT Strands

As a self-proclaimed word game enthusiast, I was excited to dive into the latest puzzle from the New York Times: Strands. But, I have to admit, my enthusiasm was short-lived. Today’s game, #161, left me stumped. In this article, I’ll share my thought process, struggles, and eventual triumph over the challenging words.

The Theme: Home Stretch?

The first hint I encountered was the theme, ‘Home stretch?’ I have to admit, I was stumped. What could this possibly mean? Was it related to sports, or perhaps something more abstract? I decided to play it safe and start with a common word that might fit the theme.

The First Word: DECK

After some trial and error, I finally stumbled upon the first word: DECK. Ah, I thought, this must be related to outdoor living. But, I still couldn’t quite grasp the connection to the theme. I needed another hint.

The Second Word: PATIO

The second word, PATIO, was a bit more obvious. But, I was still struggling to see the bigger picture. How did these words relate to each other, and to the theme? I needed another nudge.

The Breakthrough

It wasn’t until I stumbled upon the word BALCONY that things started to click. I realized that all the words were related to outdoor spaces, and the theme ‘Home stretch?’ was actually referring to the final stretch of outdoor areas in a home. Ah-ha!

The Spangram: BONUSSPACES

The final challenge was the spangram, BONUSSPACES. I have to admit, I was stumped. But, after some careful examination, I finally uncovered the hidden message.
