Elderly Indian Couple Fights Off Robbers with Plastic Chairs and Slippers
In a daring display of bravery, an elderly Indian couple from Tirunelveli district fought off two robbers who attacked them with machetes at their home. The incident was caught on camera, and the couple’s bravery has earned them a special award from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami.

The robbers, armed with machetes, attacked the couple, P. Shanmugavelu and his wife Senthamarai, at their home. However, the couple did not back down. Senthamarai, who was inside the house, came out and started attacking the assailants by hurling stools and chairs at them. Meanwhile, Shanmugavelu freed himself and also started attacking the robbers.
A Brave Fight
The couple’s bravery was evident in the CCTV footage, which showed them fighting off the robbers with all their might. The robbers, realizing they were no match for the couple, eventually ran away.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, K. Palaniswami, presented the couple with a special bravery award, which includes a cash prize of Rs0.2 million and gold medals. The award is a recognition of their exemplary act of bravery in chasing away the robbers.
In another award, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan was named the recipient of the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award for his contribution to scientific development, students’ welfare, and humanities. The award will be presented to him at a later date.

The Kalpana Chawla award for courage was presented to P. Ramyalakshmi, Assistant Director, Fisheries, Cuddalore. The award consists of Rs5 lakh cash and a medal.
